The first step in the E-learning design process is listening to your needs. This is to clarify the problem, goals and objectives, and outline the objectives. It also defines your target learner audience, their existing knowledge/skills, and performance blockages.
The initial kickoff meeting is also to understand business objectives, and your budgetary requirements.
Then a needs analysis is done to target the problem and create a solution.
After that, a detailed design document is created that contains details of the design such as the content, project timeline, chosen platforms, and interactions appropriate for the project. Interactions may include
branching scenarios, knowledge checks, simulations, and/or gamified elements.
This is where the structure and duration of training is proposed, strategy elections are made, learning objectives and assessments for the E-learning modules are created.
Next, the content is organized at a high level to give it a meaningful structure.
Then, storyboards are written. These are the “scripts” for the E-learning which define the slide structure and the contain the interactions and narrative voice for the experience. The storyboards also introduce assessments in the form of knowledge checks, quiz questions, and, if relevant for the training, an end of lesson test.
A prototype is created to first show the layout, design, course content, colors, navigation, interactions.
After the design document and prototype is approved by you, then development begins on the final product. This is when the interactive components for the E-learning training is created.
After the E-learning is developed, there is a review to solidify details and leave room to discuss any alterations and additions. After the project is approved, the final interactive E-learning modules are published to specification, and delivered for implementation.
The E-learning course is then implemented into a Learning Management System. There are several options in this area, and each provide different needs for the training.
After the E-learning is experienced by your learners, their results and responses are collected. Performance evaluations are made, and effectiveness of the training is measured for potential refining in future updates.
